href="https://kaiju-no8.net/en/">Kaiju No. 8 is taut with tension — not just the storytelling kind that keeps us glued, but the anxiety of living in permanent anticipation of the next large-scale disaster, of aging out of youth without a foothold in life.

Developed by Production I.G from a hit manga series, it’s set in a parallel universe where hordes of monsters (Kaiju) — gruesomely wet with pulsing sacs, multiplying madly like a lab experiment gone wrong — periodically erupt out of nowhere to lay waste to cities and livelihoods, echoing the earthquakes that are a fact of life in Japan.

The story follows a group of cadets in the elite Kaiju Defense Force — including the protagonist Kafka, a 32-year-old desperate to escape a dead-end job scrubbing city streets of Kaiju entrails — as they confront a series of increasingly belligerent Kaiju attacks, orchestrated by a villain with an uncanny ability to commandeer the bodies of unsuspecting victims.

The series visuals perfectly capture the lived-in feel of everyday places such as the sprawling shopping malls and commuter rail stations of suburban Tokyo. The visual realism makes the story immediately believable, and implicitly raises the stakes by making the terror local and visceral.

The series’ fast-paced choreography of narrative tension makes for can’t-look-away viewing. In the space of 25 minutes we might find Kafka unwittingly trapped in a Kaiju body, forced to fight off a colleague without spilling blood or giving away his identity, after which we see a swarm of Kaiju cutting silently across the night sky, destination unknown.

What gives the series its aura of raw vulnerability is Kafka’s search for a foothold in a world offering few certainties. A self-doubting millennial stranded among hotshot peers close to half his age, Kafka is constantly on the verge of flunking out. The next Kaiju attack is a ticking time bomb, a question of when. Through sheer perseverance and selfless devotion to his colleagues, he eventually manages to carve out a place for himself, keeping his hybrid Kaiju body a secret from the senior staff.

The series has its wryly knowing moments too, such as when it turns its eyes to the bureaucratic inertia of the Kaiju Defense Force brass (”But there’s no precedent!” is a familiar refrain). It’s a send-up of Japanese corporate culture that should be relatable for anyone who’s ever felt like a cog in a slow-moving machine.

The tension comes to a head when Kafka’s secret Kaiju identity becomes known, and he faces the risk of extermination under official rules. The eventual outcome may be inevitable, yet seeing Kafka’s colleagues — the entire Kaiju Defense Force, really — resolutely welcome him back into the fold feels like a not-so-small win for humanity.

Auralee: City Clothes, Hidden Dimensions

Behind the stylish Nezu Museum in Tokyo’s Aoyama neighborhood is a verdant garden, dotted with moss-covered relics and scenic tea houses. Its open blue sky and rustling bamboo fill the surrounding streets with an air of serenity, a pocket of calm impervious to the nearby bustle and traffic. Nestled in this corner of the city is Auralee’s flagship store, off a tree-lined avenue where you can also find Rick Owens and Arts & Science.

Auralee has maintained its elusive IYKYK quality while establishing itself in Japan and beyond, presenting at Paris Fashion Week since 2019. Designed by Ryota Iwai, its calling card is deceptively simple. Through its signature orchestration of colors, silhouettes, and raw materials, Auralee shows us how to peel away the flatness of everyday dressing -- and by extension, our daily routines -- in a way that is reinvigorating yet calm, refined but practical.

Given the pressures of modern life -- the need to be constantly presentable despite the lack of time, the unpredictable weather, the grime of city streets -- our everyday outfits tend to run on a predictable palette of cream and beige against blacks and navies, with maybe a favorite color thrown in. Ease is priceless. But the pragmatism of our choices can also leave us yearning for more depth and texture.

What Auralee offers is the intrigue of texture and the warmth of subtle tints without drifting into whimsy or ostentation. Silky shirts cut from Egyptian Finx cotton. Airy pullovers woven on vintage looms. Mongolian baby cashmere. It sounds almost self-explanatory.

Seen in person, the clothes are more interesting than their bill of materials might suggest. Often there’s a specific detail that’s meant to be experienced, like a pair of denim pants that turn out to be sensuously lightweight, perfect for summertime. The deep consideration given to tactile details gives the clothes their emotional heft, like an antidote to the impersonal efficiency embedded into urban living.

Ultimately, it’s Iwai’s attentiveness to the textures of daily life — the busy subway turnstiles, the late night throughfares, the Sundays at the park -- and his ability to infuse wardrobe staples with an understated buoyancy that transforms getting dressed into a small ritual to look forward to.

Viewed from afar, Auralee may look like a fashion brand without any particular assertion. But clothes are meant to be worn. With laid-back confidence, Auralee shows us how light, texture, and contrast can be folded into the rhythms of everyday life -- like an invisible mist drifting from an evergreen garden.

Creepy Nuts' "Yofukashi no Uta": Tuning into the Night

Yofukashi no Uta is a catchy ode to the small hours by the Japanese hip-hop duo Creepy Nuts. href="https://youtu.be/F6_zbnfxoBA?si=04kdu7iMmXwAoyB1">Yofukashi no Uta is a catchy ode to the small hours by the Japanese hip-hop duo Creepy Nuts. A whirlwind account of the love-hate relationship between a budding rapper and the darkness, it helped introduce Creepy Nuts to a wider audience after inspiring a hit anime (called Call of the Night) in 2022.

From the oddly transfixing opening, with its chirps and crackles reminiscent of tuning into the radio at night, Yofukashi no Uta abounds with playful energy. The wailing refrain and kaleidoscopic references -- to Greek myths, archaic ways of telling time, a deft nod to the Monkees -- spin about you like neon signs in the dark. In effect, it’s a lot like the headiness of unplugging from the daytime.

In the space of four minutes, we follow the protagonist from childhood (”Never liked going to bed at nine”) to a curious fourteen year old pilfering Dad’s liquor and cigarettes, to an older teen sneaking out to join freestyle rap sessions on Saturday nights. The song moves fluidly between soul-baring confessional and nonchalant origin story, building a sense of connection and anticipation. Throughout, the universal weight of social expectations and daily routine is acknowledged through the magnetic pull of the dark.

For all its devotion, Yofukashi no Uta is clear-eyed about what the night doesn’t offer. In this telling, our affection for the night is a one-way infatuation that leaves us grasping at dawn, tired and dry-eyed. It doesn’t offer any remedy for the anxiety keeping us awake at night. Nor is there any hint of grand meaning in daytime alienation. It’s this combination of emotional insight and unsentimental honesty that elevates the song from a curious anthem for night owls to a gesture of solidarity.

I went to see Creepy Nuts perform live this past summer. The set began at sundown. Between songs, the darkness of the hall was lit up by a giant reclining baby, beaming like a deity bearing good fortune from the on-stage video wall. Dressed for the beach, he looked blissfully at home in the velvet dark, oblivious to the demands of the world.

Frieren: Reckoning with the Remains Japanese animated series that unfolds with quiet tenderness, examines this question through the lens of the elfin titular character. Blessed with seemingly eternal youth and vast magical powers, Frieren is oblivious to the passage of time, as villages bloom and wither on the sun-dappled horizon.

Nonetheless, she is left disconsolate by the sudden death of Himmel, a legendary knight and her long-ago companion on the demon-slaying journey of the title. Despite his obvious devotion to her -- culminating in a silent proposal on a knee, no less -- only after Himmel’s death does Frieren begin to dwell on the moments brimming with Himmel’s unspoken affection, which she failed to recognize in time.

Frieren’s predicament is similar to that of Stevens, the self-effacing butler at the heart of Kazuo Ishiguro’s early masterpiece, The Remains of the Day. As Stevens finds upon cautiously stepping out of his professional shell, the object of Frieren’s longing is vividly alive in her memories but achingly out of reach in life.

Unlike Stevens -- trapped by rigid social mores in the twilight years of the British Empire, as well as his human lifespan -- Frieren must contend with herself over the millennia stretching out before her. She decides to embark on a long journey north to commemorate Himmel’s memory, with two precocious charges in tow.

The story starts out slowly as long journeys tend to. The rustic setting is so quiet and tranquil that you could hear a heron gliding in for a catch. But not to worry, the countryside is teeming with flesh-eating demons. Soon enough, the journey becomes an adventure, and we start to see flashes of the impish personality buried behind Frieren’s world-weary demeanor.

Making her way north, Frieren encounters many reminders of her past journey with Himmel, including the odd statue or two. But her bittersweet loss gradually evolves into a belated appreciation of Himmel’s attentiveness towards others, as she grows into a mentor and an unlikely agony aunt to her party. New friendships and memories follow. After centuries of ascetic isolation, Frieren herself seems the most surprised by her newfound joie de vivre.

Frieren and her party make weeks-long detours on a whim, and tie their scarves in a perfect sequence of knots. Tea-time is a paramount ritual. It’s a world removed from the optimization of every waking hour and the fraying of attention spans. It combines the stoic dignity of a bygone world -- Stevens’ ideal -- with a modern sensibility for self-renewal. It’s a fantasy universe, yet somehow it always feels like home. Looking into a familiar mirror, we find ourselves wondering if we can ever be truly free from the past.

Asura: Domestic Lives Behind the href="https://www.festival-cannes.com/en/p/hirokazu-kore-eda-3/">Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Netflix mini-series traces the hidden threads of performance that hold family life together, with everyday items for props.

Behind a delicate screen -- frosted glass, lace curtains, sheets drying in the sun - there’s an outline of a figure. With a quick flick, we glimpse a familiar face, absorbed in their emotions. This visual motif aptly expresses Asura’s central concern: the longings buried behind well-mannered facades, and their uneasy expression within the domestic sphere.

The 2025 adaptation of Kuniko Mukoda’s novel opens with a young woman calling her older sister, who is preoccupied with packing off her family for the day. After batting down the usual distractions -- an enquiry about marriage plans, a child hunting for pocket money -- she secures a promise to meet that evening without revealing her intentions.

This short conversation -- domestic and disarming on the surface, with questions circling around what’s left unsaid -- sets the tone for Asura. In short order, Takiko, the librarian, rings her other two sisters to round out the family gathering. A quartet composed of a widow, a housewife, a librarian, and a waitress, they’re bound by brusque affection that can’t entirely mask the passage of time pulling them apart.

Family scandal -- kicked off by Takiko’s suspicion that their elderly father has been having an affair -- is the catalyst that re-ignites the complicated web of loyalty and rivalry between the sisters. It also exposes their own hidden longings, from a sister with a secret affair of her own to another hitching her fortunes to an aspiring boxer.

What pushes Asura beyond the realm of family melodrama is the unsettling assertiveness of Takiko’s announcement. She’s not so much outraged at her father’s deception as she is by her sisters’ deliberate complacency in the face of loneliness and betrayal in their own lives. Instead of issuing smug reminders to get married, she’s saying, why can’t you stand up for yourselves?

Like Laurie Colwin’s stories -- set in a similar time, different place -- Asura explores the emotional currents flowing through ordinary lives free from mayhem, at least on the surface. The characters gather around savory home-cooked meals and commiserate over tea, carefully taking stock of their emotions like the candied fruits and rum for Colwin’s Jamaican fruitcake.

The crucial difference between the two worlds is in how much self-expression the characters feel entitled to. Colwin’s female protagonists may wonder if they’re being difficult or selfish. But they never truly doubt that self-fulfillment is attainable, out there waiting for them. In Asura’s world, Makiko — the most self-assured sister — doubling down on her suspicions of her husband’s infidelity at the end of the story is a seismic event, bringing Takiko’s opening salvo full circle.

Asura is not the kind of story to spell out what’s at stake. Instead the four sisters’ lives illustrate how emotions are suppressed and expressed, within a contrast of personalities. Nor is there any grand rupture or resolution. Rather, Asura is interested in the quiet flow of emotions, like a moment of joy blooming between Takiko and her beau through the glass wall of a downtown lobby, unnoticed by passersby.

In the final episode, we find the eldest two sisters bathed in winter sunlight after a stretch of darkness, waiting for the bus. We see Makiko’s face from the side, chin up — her signature angle — as she ruminates on her husband’s lack of affection. She looks like a woman finished with hiding her doubts, her face upturned toward the sun.
